May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Please join the University of Maryland School of Social Work Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) in recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM) this May 2023.

This national observance began in 1979 with the first 10 days of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, the observance was expanded from a week to a month by Congress, and in 2009 was renamed as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. To celebrate AAPIHM, ODEI has compiled several resources for the SSW community to learn more about Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history, issues, and involvement in social work and social justice. Recognizing the complications around using the umbrella term “AAPI,” efforts were made to include specific educational materials and resources around Pacific Islander communities, as well as transracial adoptee and mixed-race experiences.
