Dr. Jessica Orth NIH Pathway to Independence Award | K99!

The purpose of the Pathway to Independence Award is to provide postdoctoral mentorship and career development for the PI as they establish an independent research program, followed by support as an early-stage investigator. Dr. John Cagle in the School of Social work will be the primary mentor for Dr. Orth on this Award; Dr. Orth will also be supported by a team of mentors from multiple institutions.

This project will apply novel, evidence-informed approaches to examine the ‘special’ features of nursing home Alzheimer’s special care units and translate findings into actionable care practices to create beneficial change in nursing home care among residents with dementia. The developed “Good Life” model of care will be implemented in a small but rigorous randomized controlled clinical trial by the PI as an early-stage investigator.

Knowledge gained in this project will inform a subsequent R01 application to conduct a more definitive examination of the “Good Life” model of nursing home care. Findings will also have implications for persons with dementia and their families, nursing homes, policy makers, and researchers on how to promote the “Good Life” among residents with dementia in long-term care communities.
