Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) Meeting

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hosted the Pulse Survey Teach-In at the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) Meeting on Monday, April 18th from 12:15 to 1:45pm.

The survey, which was completed by students, faculty, and staff late last year and early this year, aims to get a “pulse” on key DEI issues impacting SSW. During the Teach-In, attendees had the opportunity to delve into the survey’s responses and learn how the SSW is using the data to addresses our challenges and build on our strengths.

This year’s survey asked questions around receiving support, transitioning back to in-person learning, experiencing microaggressions, and perceptions of inclusion and belonging. Some of the trends the office noticed this year included:

  • Clear guidelines for reporting issues/resources available

  • Providing students with an overview of the kinds of disability accommodations they could request

  • More chances to engage in DEI events (i.e., not during class or field times)

  • Request for more inclusivity in coursework

  • Collaboration with Office of Field Education to provide training and support for field instruction to help mitigate issues in field

  • More HR Processes (hiring, promotion) guided by DEI

  • Stronger integration between USG and the Baltimore campus on DEI Issues

The survey’s data will help the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion inform and shape policies and practices as well as launch programs and initiatives that promote a more safe, equitable, and inclusive SSW community!
