Crumpton leads seminar for refugee Myanmar students in Thailand

Adjunct faculty member David Crumpton is currently directing a seminar for masters and doctoral students who were forced to flee Myanmar as a result of the recent military coup there. The three-month (July - September 2021) seminar is being conducted at Chiang Mai University's (Thailand) School of Public Policy. Crumpton is directing the July and early August seminar sessions remotely.

He will conduct the last August and September sessions in person in Chiang Mai as part of a four-month Fulbright Scholar grant. The topics covered in the seminar are relevant to the participants' anticipated roles as leaders in a post-military regime Myanmar. They include peace and reconciliation, the inclusion of historically marginalized groups such as women and ethnic minorities, institution-building, and creating a socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient Myanmar. The participants include journalists, student activists, NGO workers, former government employees, and think tank policy specialists. Crumpton is drawing upon his extensive recent SE Asia research and publications to support the seminar and has included other experts on Myanmar to serve as seminar panelists. Former MSW student Julia Roche and current MSW student Eva Bialobrzeski are assisting Crumpton on the seminar. The document included with this item describes the seminar content.
