Baltimore Community Foundation Gives Money to SWCOS PSC Caregiver Mental Health Supports Program

$15,000 has been award to SWCOS' PSC Caregiver Mental Health Supports here at the SSW by the Baltimore Community Foundation.

The purpose of this project is to support caregivers’ in the seven SWCOS Community Schools by offering a virtual gathering that will provide peer support and mental health resources.

Exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, many families are struggling with isolation, grief and loss (of life, employment, normalcy). This is on top of many of the challenges that families were already dealing with prior to the international pandemic. Additionally, caregivers are adjusting to being home with their children and supporting them as they navigate virtual schooling, and the impact of all these changes for their children. SWCOS Community School Coordinators have received a considerable increase in requests from families around resource coordination and referral needs, now taking up more than 25% of their role in many of the schools. In addition to helping families meet their basic needs, SWCOS is able to support caregivers’ by offering a virtual gathering that will provide peer support and mental health resources.

SWCOS will offer virtual wellness groups for caregivers that will include the following topics:

Series 1: Supporting Caregiver Self-Care

Series 2: Providing Resources on How to Support Their Students’ Mental Health

Each wellness series will consist of three 60-minute sessions offered during the evenings. Parents and caregivers will be able to sign up for either of the wellness series that will offer content, support, and a wellness package that will be sent/delivered to their homes. The sessions will be able to serve up to 150 caregivers (parents, grandparents, guardians, etc.), whose students attend one of our seven SWCOS Community Schools, which are predominantly in West Baltimore.
