Dr. Davitt Presents on Racial Disparities at International Gerontology Conference in Sweden

Associate Professor Dr. Joan Davitt presented research on racial/ethnic disparities in access to and outcomes of Medicare home health care at the International Association for Gerontology & Geriatrics annual meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden this summer.

This mixed methods research shows that older Medicare beneficiaries of color are less likely to improve in functional status after receiving home health services than their white counterparts. Qualitative interviews with home health staff showed that both covert and overt discrimination, along with other factors, play a role in these outcome disparities.
