UMSSW postdoctoral fellow Allison Hepworth, PhD, was the first place winner in the Nutrition Translation topical area at the American Society for Nutrition’s Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Poster Competition, held June 8, 2019. This event recognizes the highest scoring research abstracts submitted by students and young investigators at Nutrition 2019, the flagship meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. More than 1,000 abstracts were submitted by students and postdoctoral fellows and the Emerging Leaders in Nutrition Science Poster Competition aims to recognize the top 10% highest scoring abstracts as finalists. Abstracts were rated by more than 500 nutrition scientists. Dr. Hepworth's abstract was titled, "Exploring Parents’ Satisfaction with Infant and Toddler Feeding Information: A Repeated-Measures Analysis of Information Need and Acquisition Characteristics." This research was conducted as part of Dr. Hepworth's dissertation research at Penn State University. The findings suggest that parents were more satisfied with information about infant feeding topics (e.g., breastfeeding, introducing solid foods) when the information was perceived as useful and trustworthy. Clarity of information and easy of information access were also positively associated with satisfaction, to a lesser extent than perceived utility and trust. In the future, Dr. Hepworth plans to replicate these findings using experimental methods to better understand how to translate evidence-based guidance about childhood obesity prevention to parents of infants. Dr. Hepworth is currently mentored by UMSSW Associate Professor, Dr. Lisa Berlin, to expand expertise in early childhood prevention research.
