This March: Join the Me + White Supremacy Workbook Circle

workbook

What? “A 28-day journey to kickstart your life-long anti-racism work. Part education, part activation, the Me And White Supremacy Workbook is a first-of-its-kind personal anti-racism tool for people holding white privilege to begin to examine and dismantle their complicity in the oppressive system of white supremacy.” Written by Layla F. Saad, a writer and speaker whose work explores the intersections of race, feminism, spirituality, and leadership. Why? “Perhaps you are a person who has self-identified as ‘colour-blind’. Perhaps you have considered yourself a progressive, liberal person who just happens to be white or white-passing. Perhaps you are a spiritual person who has believed that the divine principle that ‘we are all one’ means that you can’t be racist. Perhaps the fear of being called racist has held you back from taking a real honest look at the way you have caused racist harm. Perhaps you’ve been more attached to being seen as ‘one of the good ones’ than you have to actually practicing anti-racism. Perhaps you’re ready to do the work.” Who? “This workbook is for any person* who holds white privilege**. *Any person: Meaning persons of any gender-identity, including gender non-conforming persons. **Who holds white privilege: Meaning persons who are visually identifiable as white, white-passing or holding white privilege. Therefore this includes persons who may be biracial, mixed race, or white-passing people of colour, who benefit under systems of white supremacy from having lighter skin colour than visibly Brown, Black or Indigenous people.” *For the purposes of avoiding hierarchical relationships impacting the group, this is meant for students only at this time. When? The Me + White Supremacy Workbook is meant to be completed over the course of 28 days, which includes reading and completing journal prompts each day. The Anti-Oppression Work Group, The Alliance for Anti-Racist Social Work Practitioners, and the Intersectional Feminist Social Workers are working together to organize a weekly meeting in March where a group can meet to reflect upon this journey and this work. Attendance at the meetings is not required to complete the workbook, and you are more than welcome to join the groups as much or as little as you would like during this process. What next? For now, AOWG is collecting information to come up with a plan for these weekly meetings. If you are interested please fill out our Google form at this link: docs.google.com/forms/d/1GzNE9ropPXyLd-xt80bPSVTb4b62DWszjnjTdDSzoWs/edit and you will be included in the emails as we finalize our plans for the group.
