Hispanic Heritage Month at UMB

Hispanic Heritage Month has already begun, extending from September 15th through October 15th. Why the strange dates? This four week period was selected because it contains the highest number of independence days celebrated by Latin American countries.

During this month we have the opportunity to recognize the meaningful contributions of people of Hispanic and Latin American heritage. Some are prominent figures such as the first Latina Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, or Mario Molina, PhD, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the effects of chlorofluorocarbons on the ozone layer. Many are not well known, but contribute at all levels and in many industries in our nation and in our city, bringing vitality and enriching our American culture.

Our wonderful students in the Latino Medical Student Association have organized several events throughout the month, and there are several UMB campus events as well; please see these listed below.
