Applying for Interprofessional Trip to India in January 2019

Interprofessional Exploration of Health, and Mental Health in a Global Context in Kerala, India

UMB social work, nursing, pharmacy and public health students will learn about different and similar models of mental health and health care practices in India and the United States. The course includes participation in the Dyuti 2019 International Conference at Rajagiri College in Kerala, India. While in India, students and faculty will visit social service, mental health, and health programs in Kerala to meet with consumers and providers. Through small group discussions, assignments, and journaling, students will have opportunities to learn how different cultures approach issues of health, and mental health.

Social work students who are accepted will be registered for course SOWK 705 as part of their Spring 2019 course load. Thus they will be eligible for financial aid for the course expenses.

Nursing and public health students can either sign up for SOWK 705 (through School cross listings) or see if independent credit is available through their respective schools. If so, nursing and public health students might also be eligible for student loan support.

Cost to student: A grant from UMB’s Center for Global Education Initiatives will cover the cost of conference attendance, but students will be expected to contribute between $2500-$3000 to cover airfare, visa, tours, transportation, guides, housing and meals. Financial aid may be applied (check with our school's Financial Aid Director).

Important Dates: Pre-travel required classes: Wednesday, October 10th, 6-9pm, UMB SSW Saturday, November 3rd, 9am-12:30 pm, UMB SSW Monday, December 10th, 12-2pm, UMB SSW

Travel dates: January 6th – 20th Spring meetings: Debriefing meeting Tuesday, January 29th, 6-8pm, UMB SSW Group presentation to the campus community in February or March, TBA

APPLICATION PROCESS: The course is limited to 18 students who will be selected through a competitive application process that includes review of application materials and an interview.

A brief interview is required as part of the application process. Interviews will be scheduled the week on September 17th. Selected students will be notified by September 28th. Student must confirm their space in the course by making a deposit of $900 and submitting required documents by October 3rd. The remainder of the travel expenses will be due by November 1st.
