Recognized as the "world's most celebrated existential psychotherapist, Dr. Irvin Yalom comes to the University of Maryland School of Social Work on Monday, March 26 from 12:15-1:45 for a lecture and Q&A session. Yalom will first be interviewed by a faculty member and then will take questions from the audience. After his talk he will sign copies of his 2017 book, Becoming myself: A psychiatrist’s memoir, which will be on sale.
Dr. Yalom is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Stanford University and the author of several highly acclaimed textbooks, including Existential Psychotherapy and The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy. He is also the author of stories and novels related to psychotherapy, some of which have appeared on the New York Times’ bestselling list, including Love's Executioner, When Nietzsche Wept, Lying on the Couch, Momma and the Meaning of Life, and The Schopenhauer Cure. A recent non-fiction book is Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death.
To some students and practitioners, he may be best known for his videos on group work that have been shown in classrooms for decades.
His newest book, published within the last 6 months, is Becoming myself: A psychiatrist’s memoir, and details not only his career as a psychiatrist but his early life growing up in a working class neighborhood in DC, attending George Washington University, and completing his residency in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins after graduating from medical school at Boston University.
What is so powerful and recognizable in his work is his level of self-disclosure both in his therapy and in his writing. His name on YouTube turns up over 10,000 results consisting of group videos, demonstrations, consultations, lectures, and interviews. A ninety-minute documentary about his life, YALOM’s CURE, is available on-line.
