LGBTQ youth in foster care face different challenges than children who are heterosexual and identify with the gender they were born as.
For example, finding foster homes. Eris Eady, program director for the LGBT Center of Greater Cleveland, said one in one situation, siblings couldn't be housed together because the foster parents refused to accept a child's sexual identity.
"The stories are endless and they're hard," she said.
Cuyahoga County is one of four sites across the country splitting a $10 million federal grant to help LGBTQ youth in the foster care system.
Led by University of Maryland's School of Social Work, the money pays for programs to address the needs of lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, questioning and Two-Spirit children across the country. Two-Spirit is a Native American term referring to people who believe they have both a male and female spirit in their body.
