LEH Building Up Our Youth

The Leonard E. Hicks Community Center's LEH Building Up Our Youth program is seeking volunteers to run a special after school enrichment program. We would like volunteers to work with children on social-emotional, cognitive, physical activities. Those who have an interest in child psychology, PT and OT are especially needed to teach and assist children with assigned tasks. The program runs Monday through Friday, 2:30pm until 6:00PM. The program follows the Baltimore City Public Schools calendar.

In response to the needs of youth in our community, the Center created Building Up Our Youth. The program primarily serves youth from the Rosemont, Park Heights, and South West Baltimore neighborhoods. Beginning in the Summer of 2017, the Center launched the LEH Building Up Our Youth Initiative. With parental permission, youth ages 4 to 24 are assigned a coordinator to assist them will in mapping out a plan for their education, professional, and social goals. To achieve this, youth and their families are offered: • Full-time and part-time, quality early childhood and school-age programming for children between the ages of 5 to 14. • Bi-monthly family literacy programming and STEAM workshops for youth ages 5 to 21. • Weekly literacy and math tutoring sessions. • Free Pre-GED Testing and GED classes in partnership with Strong City. • Featured speakers who build self-confidence. • Free breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. • Free clothing and books offered to all youth. • Free educational and social fieldtrips. • Small-group sessions with business and community leaders who share their personal stories of professional and personal success with the students. • School choice workshops for parents and youth. • College application and financial aid sessions presented by college admission officers. • Career workshops presented by industry leaders in business, science, technology, engineering and math. • "Do Something" sessions where students identify issues facing their community and develop plans to affect change. • Enhancing the lives of young men in Baltimore through the "Makings Of A Man Male Youth Initiative". **Coordination Services are not required for youth and families to participate in Center activities**
