In the United States, up to 43 percent of people with cancer experience psychosocial distress. In fact, behavioral health disorders co-occur with a significant number of general medical illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes, demonstrating a critical need to bring mental health and substance abuse treatment into specialty care settings.

Early attention to these psychological and social-emotional needs of the patient can result in better adjustment, medication adherence, improved quality of life, and greater trust between the medical providers and patient. Yet specialty doctors face many challenges, such as identifying patients in need and ensuring sufficient access to behavioral health specialists. Caregivers are also vulnerable to depression, severe stress, and grief.

Join SAMHSA-HRSA CENTER FOR INTEGRATED HEALTH SOLUTIONS for a webinar to learn about a successful partnership between a hospital system and an oncology practice, which has woven behavioral health screening and treatment into their practice, and the lessons they have learned along the way.
