In fact, behavioral health disorders co-occur with a significant number of general medical illnesses, including heart disease and diabetes, demonstrating a critical need to bring mental health and substance abuse treatment into specialty care settings.
Early attention to these psychological and social-emotional needs of the patient can result in better adjustment, medication adherence, improved quality of life, and greater trust between the medical providers and patient. Caregivers are also vulnerable to depression, severe stress, and grief.
