Become a Reading Partner!

We are currently seeking responsible, high-caliber, patient, and motivated tutors to join our growing team in Baltimore, MD. Tutors are essential to carrying out our mission to assist elementary school students in literacy development and to inspire children to be lifelong readers. Tutors engage in Reading Partners curriculum with selected students in one-on-one tutoring sessions held at our on-site Reading Centers. Tutors collaborate with the Reading Partners School Site Coordinator to assess students' needs and how best to address them. The children tutors work with are performing below their expected academic grade level and enjoy the benefits of working with a tutor to improve their overall reading skills. No previous experience is required, as our program includes its own structured curriculum and provides ongoing training and support for volunteers.

Organization description

Reading Partners is a national nonprofit that works to expand life opportunities for underserved elementary school children by empowering them with strong literacy skills. We work directly with schools in low-income communities to provide one-on-one literacy tutoring for students who read below grade level. Becoming a literacy tutor intern requires no experience, as we provide an easy-to-follow curriculum that includes all of the books, worksheets, and step-by-step lesson plans to teach an effective lesson. We seek volunteers on an ongoing basis during the academic year (September through May) to assist our on-site coordinators with tutoring and possible organizational projects. In addition to tutoring, interns may also have the opportunity to develop additional projects based upon academic and professional development interests. Reading Partners currently operates reading centers in Baltimore City elementary schools. All tutoring centers operate Monday-Thursday during regular school hours (approximately 8:30am-4:00pm), although tutor session times vary site to site.
