In honor of Black History Month, please join the UMBSSW Financial Social Work Initiative as we participate in a 3-part webinar series on February 14, February 28, and March 14 on the topic of financial capability and African Americans. Webinars are offered by the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education. There is no cost to students and staff who want to participate, but please email Dr. Christine Callahan at ccallahan@ssw.umaryland.edu if you would like to reserve a seat. Space is limited. You can attend one or all three! All webinars are from 12-1pm in Room 3e29b. Titles and a brief description of each webinar is offered below:
Webinar 1 (2/14): African Americans AND Finance: From Slavery to Civil Rights: This webinar builds a financial professionals' foundation for cultural understanding, by taking a deeper look at the economic progression of the African American community from slavery to civil rights, analyzing both the strides and the setbacks made during this time.
Webinar 2 (2/18): African Americans IN Finance: Racial Identity and More: The second webinar explores the unique connection of money and racial identity. It takes you through the Black Power Movement of the 1960’s and 70’s and into the present day, as African Americans begin to embrace their economic freedom in American society.
Webinar 3 (3/14): African Americans ON Finance: What Financial Professionals Can Do: Awareness creates opportunity. In the third and final webinar, financial professionals build upon what they have learned about the African American community and learn to apply this knowledge to better communicate, educate and serve their African American clients.
Schane D. Coker, MS, AFC, will facilitate the webinars. Schane Coker is a Financial Coach for the Financial Coaching Program, an initiative of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), serving veterans, transitioning service members, their family members, and low-income individuals in the Florida counties of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe. Schane holds a Bachelors’ in Financial Counseling and Planning, and a Master’s in Family and Consumer Economics from Purdue University. He also has 6 years of banking industry experience working at a Credit Union in various positions, including a Loan Officer and Assistant Branch Manager. His research interests include the Financial Capacity and Stability of a Consumer’s Household, looking into how an individual or group of consumers making financial decisions based on their Psychological, Sociological, and Economic background and history.
