Social enterprises are businesses with a primarily social mission that reinvest the majority of their profits in pursuit of that mission. It is imperative to master the art of using innovative legal/financial structures to place intellectual property rights in common-ownership or charitable structures where they can be held in trust for wide social benefit, and at the same time protect the originating social enterprise from commercial competition. This workshop will provide a starting point for collaboration between leaders based at University of Maryland and potential commercialization partners to create, launch, and scale social enterprises. In particular, this workshop will offer a conceptual understanding of how university knowledge and resources, including intellectual property, can be capitalized on through creation of social enterprises.
