The second event in the Wednesday evening SOWK 631 series on social justice will have Stephen Janis and Taya Graham, reporters for The Real News Network, discussing their work in Baltimore and beyond. Their reportage on issues such as violence, mass incarceration, and police reform; the disparate impact of City economic development policies; and racism in Pocomoke City ("the friendliest town on the Eastern Shore" unless you are a person of color) has been far deeper and broader than the mainstream media's coverage. We will learn about the importance and challenges of media work from a social justice perspective.
The Real News Network is an international internet-based news operation headquartered in Baltimore. Stephen and Taya, as "The Mod Squad", may also be heard on First Edition with Sean Yoes, WEAA 88.9FM - Morgan State University's "Voice of the Community", on Wednesdays and Fridays at 5:00PM.
The entire School of Social Work community is invited to join us at 6:00PM on Wednesday, September 21st, in the auditorium. Please contact Jeff Singer at firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
