Since COVID-19 has made one-on-one visits nearly impossible, Promise Heights’ B’more for Healthy Babies (BHB) of the University of Maryland, School of Social Work has developed significant ways to support new mothers of Upton/Druid Heights by extending special services. These have included weekly virtual prenatal and postpartum support groups; delivering diapers, wipes, and breastfeeding supplies; providing breastfeeding virtual support sessions by certified lactation counselors; and hosting virtual check-ins with expectant and parenting families (ages 0-3,) as well as much more. The University of Maryland, School of Social Work has partnered with the Black Mental Health Alliance and HeartSmiles, LLC on offering live informational sessions to youth from Baltimore on mental health in the African American Community via YouTube live. Guest speakers include the School of Social Works very own Andrea Tompkins (MSW student), Orin Howard (Clinical Instructor), and LaShonda Godwin (Clinical Instructor)! This is the final week for students who will be entering their Advanced Year beginning Fall 2020 to submit scholarship applications! Newly accepted students will not be considered for these awards. SSW Faculty Asked by Youth Villages to Evaluate the Use of the GuideTree Service

SSW Faculty Bethany Lee and Tony Bonadio have recently been awarded a nearly $37,000 grant from Youth Villages to evaluate the use of the GuideTree service in child and family-serving organizations. The GuideTree service includes a case consultation model and access to an online portal with evidence-based techniques and activities for youth and families. The project will assess the implementation of GuideTree in several pilot sites nationally and assess the impact on staff, organizations, and youth. GuideTree may be a tool to promote the use of evidence-based practice in child and family settings, including public and private child welfare organizations.

Youth REACH Phases 8 and 9 Funded by Maryland

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development has provided nearly $500,000 in funds for Phase 8 and 9 of the SSW's Institute for Innovation and Implementation's Youth REACH efforts. The purpose of Youth REACH is to continue to support the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development by serving as the coordinating entity for a statewide Youth Count to collect data on youth homelessness across Maryland. The Institute will disseminate findings from the count and collaborate with DHCD and local continuums of care to identify and coordinate implementation of initiatives, events, or other activities to prevent and end youth homelessness in Maryland based on data and less
